Summer/Fall House Concert Series
Artemis & Daniel Berkman Room for Living Tour
I’m doing a series of house concerts this summer and fall with multi-instrumentalist Daniel Berkman. We’re toting an eclectic mini orchestra of flute, cello, ukulele, keys, percussion, kora, and gadgets, playing new and seasoned material and improv. We’ll be all over the US map, and we may be landing near you – please RSVP if you’d like to join us. And if you don’t see a date in your neighborhood, feel free to request it! What’s a house concert, you say? You might be the perfect host. Leave a comment below or drop me a line - we’re filling up dates, but are happy to meet new hosts and love playing other venues as well. Suggestions welcome! Here’s a little sample of some improv we did during January’s house concert tour with Daniel and Steve Lawson – stick it on while you read on and decide which show to come to.

Enjoy an intimate evening of song and lush instrumental music featuring an electro-acoustic mini-orchestra – kora, piano, cello, ukulele, flute, guitar and percussion – with multi-instrumentalist and avant-garde composer Daniel Berkman, and voltaic celestial pop artist Artemis.
There is something extraordinary about watching talented artists perform for a small audience in a private space – both for the audience, and for the performers. If you have experienced this, you know what I mean. If not, then you are in for a pleasant surprise. House concerts are a special opportunity to experience music in a comfortable environment. The salon is an old form, of value, once obviated and now enlivened by changing technology. House concerts allow listeners to enjoy music of talented artists in an intimate, personal setting. Live music and direct connection between artists and audience is a truly unique experience. Timely arrival is appreciated. We will have two 45 minute sets of music with a break between for chatting and eating.
DANIEL BERKMAN is a San Francisco based composer, multi-instrumentalist and innovator of the kora (a 21-stringed harp/lute from West Africa), using electronic devices and loop boxes to transform his kora in real time in live performance. Daniel also plays guitar, handsonic percussion, cello, and piano and is a featured electronic artist on RTFM Records under the moniker “Colfax”. Daniel has also composed many eclectic scores for choreographers and dance companies in San Francisco, notably Robert Dekkers of Post:Ballet, Sarah Shelton Mann, ODC, Company Chaddick, Lizz Roman and Dancers, Kunst-Stoff and others. http://rtfmrecords.com/danielberkman
ARTEMIS is a New York native, Oakland-based artist whose songwriting is a relentlessly genre-defiant exploration of science and sensuality, poetry and emotion, the natural and supernatural. In live performance, she layers looped vocals to build skeletons of textured harmony and quirky rhythm, adding naked timbres of piano, guitar, flute, and ukulele, alongside electronic sound-and-effect generating gadgets. Floating above and weaving together this simple yet sophisticated palette, the singer’s superpower is subtlety, from intricate inflections in a near-whisper, to the use of dissonance as counterweight in belted-out Bulgarian-style choirs.
Artemis “presides over an aural slow-burn like one of Wim Wenders’ angels – warm, wise, detached, waiting for you….”
“I cannot think of any artist in any musical genre who speaks with greater personal intimacy while at the same time writing with more innovation or style than Artemis does”
– Tim Quigley, Groovera Chilled Web Radio
